Hi,
I am a mac user and want to upload my database to a website to be hosted from there, rather than from my PC using an ip address. Is this possible or do i need to create a java webpage to integrate with the database. I have no server facility, so this could be a little tricky.

Is there any advice on the best place to go for advice??

(I dont normally do this kind of programming, new to filemaker)

Thanks

Warrior,

We need some clarification. Are you looking to send some or all of the data from FileMaker application to a static web page or do you want to have your FileMaker data searchable from a dynamic web page?

For example, lets say your DB contains movie titles, theaters, and show times. There are two ways to present this information.

The first way would be to send all of the information to a big table on a web page where anyone could just visually scan the entire table looking for the right movie/theater/show time combination. If the data was ordered properly the user could find it fairly easily.

The second way would be to have a page where there were search boxes. The user would enter the movie title for instance, press a submit button, and a list would display only the records that match the selection criteria.

The first method described is called a STATIC page because the user has no control over the content that is displayed. The second method described is called DYNAMIC because the content changes depending on user interaction.

Are you asking about static or dynamic web pages because the answer is very different.

striker i have a question for you if you don't mind...how to you get the file to the web..i have read through the help files, setup web companion and instant web publish but how do i get the database to the web..do i upload or is there something on the host that i need to do? and how do you access it thru i.p. address, file name?? i would like to set it up with the dynamic web page and have it in form view...thanks for any help at all you can give me..

ptco,

Personally I don't have any experience deploying a dynamic FileMaker database on the web. I have done it on an intranet (internal company website) and I have pushed static data from FileMaker to an internet webpage but building a FM driven website is another ballgame.

I would hate to give you advice and have it be wrong or open your site to attackers.

There is a company that specializes in FileMaker web deployment. They would be able to help you and their website has some freebies which may answer some of your questions.

Sorry I couldn't be of any help. Maybe there is someone else out there who can.
