Web Developer duties

Please add or comment on what a Web Application Developer does. Here is what I do and would like some additional input so I can expand:

Develop Web applications
Build Server side and client side software programs.
Design Web pages, graphics and images.

Database design and development
Design Database schemas and develop database scripts such as SQL. Transfer one dimensional data (Excel) to multi dimensional data structures (Access, MySQL).

System Engineering
Build Perl scripts to automate data transfers, process files and fetch information off Unix and Windows servers.

Process Automation/Improvement
Build Software applications for Web Interfaces to automate tasks that are currently being done manually.

Customer consulting
Advise customers on ways to improve their processes with Web enabled software. Provide guidance on their requirements.

Seems very similar to the Role that I play ... I dont currently class myself as a Web Developer as my main line of business is in Management and Consultancy.

My understanding of a 'Web Developer' is that they handle the main majority of a project other than then Design Aspect, with regards to the site and images.

So for instants, in a corperate environment when you have a team of guys, Some of which are Web Designers and other who are Web Developers.

So the Design team would moch up a graphical representation of how they want the site to look, this concept is then passed to the Developers who Develope that concept into a final product, so this would cover all you coding, test, implementation etc etc.

I think in reality the line probably isnt that clearly defined, and a large majority of Web Designers and Developers are only small companies and sole traders, so they just deal with all aspects and just badge themself as a "Developer" which in my mind sounds better than deisgner.

Just my thoughts anyway

Web application developer roles will differ from place to place depending on the nature of the role and the app being developed.

It would be hard to add things to your list when we don't know what it is that you do. Conversely, some of the things on your list, other web app developers will never have done.

For example, when I've been developing web apps, I've never touched Perl.

Perhaps you can explain what it is you want a bit clearer?

Testing
In my environment, we develop test suites for all of our server side applications (perl,php...). One line of test code per one line of the program it is testing. We are currently looking at using Smolder:

But, doing it by hand isn't too bad.

Thanks, I wanted a general idea of what web developer duties are and I now see it as more generalized to where a person works.
