I'm looking for a package to do Web Page Design. I have worked with MS FrontPage but want something that will run on Linux instead (Heard you can compile FrontPage Server extensions on Linux). I'm not a programmer so I'd be looking for something that will work along the same lines as FrontPage, something that does not require extensive knowledge of HTML/PHP etc.... Any info would be appreciated.

Regards,

Bob

Thanks, I'll take a look at bluefish. I have another question regarding apache. I am running mrtg, things are working fine with that. I created a page using indexmaker and am trying to make that my homepage. I ran apacheconf and changed the site configuration page search list to use the new one from indexmaker but I keep getting the default index.html page when hitting the site. I tried an httpd restart but that didn't help.

Thanks

Sending this over to the apache group.

Regards,

Bob

You have to change the DirectoryIndex directive so that Apache looks for the new page. DirectoryIndex specifies which file the Apache server should consider as the index for the directory being requested when none is specified. If you don't want to do this, just name the new page the same thing as the old one.

Bluefish is not WYSIWYG

Openoffice.org has a WYSIWYG web page editor as well as mozilla (basic) and StarOffice.

If you can write your own HTML code, go for vim, emac of bluefish or quante. If you prefer not to code HTML, emulate dreamweaver with Wine or vmWARE.

I use VIM and Im 100% satisfied.

Fluid11, I believe I changed the directoryIndex to the proper directory via apacheconf. I also renamed what I would like to be my homepage to index.html as suggested by someone else, but no luck, it pulls up the default homepage in /var/ no matter what I do.

LinuXelite, I'll check out something that has WYSIWYG since I'm not a programmer. Does this mean I will not have to code in HTML at all etc... If so, you mention emulating dreamweaver, can you give me a couple of pointers in the right direction. I just need something where I can drag and drop objects or put in text with hyperlinks attached to either of them, nothing really fancy.

Thanks to Both of you

I don't use apacheconf, I edit the httpd.conf file directly. Did you try that? Are you running VirtualHosts at all? Remember to restart the apache daemon after making changes to the config file --> /sbin/service httpd restart. Is it possible that you just need to refresh your browser?

Thanks fluid, editing the file took care of the problem. Now I just need to get my hands on some software so I can start building the site.

Try to use PHP with Apache!!!
let's say it's the most powerful web tools nowadays

Mike ... :)

Of course, not a single line of code (if you call HTML "code).

Dreamweaver is a great tool but its not free and worst, not GPL.

However, try using WINE ( Its not as stable as i wanted tough. Vmware.com is another great tool. No problem at all... but its a virual machine.

Codeweaver has a great tool, CrossOver Office. You can use MS FRONT PAGE with that.

Try openoffice. its worth the look
