web database applications - how do they work

Hi
I was hoping someone might be able to help me. I'm just getting started with all this and things are getting a bit confusing!!

What's the difference between a web server and a web application server and how do they interact with each other as well as with as with a database to produce a web database application,

Also, If anyone knows of any websites where I could get a general overview of how a web DB application works it would be great. I've looked on the web but its hard to see how all the different parts work together.

I would really appreciate some help with this,
