We are currently running 7.2.... When you run a backup database command which will default to offline, does the database do a db2stop, does it just buffer all updates and applies them when it completes or does to just put a halt to everything and let the applications continue when it completes?

Thanks....

You won't be able to do an offline backup if there are still connections open. Either people terminate their connection or you issue a 'force all applications' to get them out of the air. As soon as backup is finished connection can be started again. I doubt that the database will be actually stopped, since it does not need to be explicitly restarted (that is my experience.......)

If you have archive logging enabled you may be able to do an online backup

issue:

db2 get db cfg for <database>

and look for 'log retain for recovery status' If this is set to yes you should be able to do an online backup
