My WD Caviar 200gb drive has failed on me, i came across this thread thread751-1046123 and the drive is currently sitting in the fridge.

however, noticed on ebay there is a similiar drive (model number is different) my drive model is WD2000JB-00GVA0 whilst the one advertised on ebay is WD2000JD-00HBB0

If i go the route of swapping circuit boards, do i need to find the exact same model or can i get away with a later model.

The WD2000JB is EIDE and the WD2000JD is SATA, so the interface to your PC is different. You are going to need the same board (preferably with the same firmware) to have any chance at all of recovering your data.

Just a note , finally got the drive reconised by buying a IDE to SATA converter. I dont know why this worked but it does. Little damage to the drive and currently backing it up externally.
