I'm trying to find a WD 40 gig hard drive to attempt to swap the PCBs on a dead drive. My drive number is "WD400" but I'm seeing it also advertised as a "WD400BB" - Are these drives the same or different? Anyone know what the "BB" stands for?

There is a "BB" version and a "JB" version. The difference in the two is the amount of buffer cache each drive has. The BB version only has 2MB, while the JB has 8MB.

In a standard configuration, you may not notice much difference between the two. But in a decently fast PC, the JB can have as much as a 15-20% boost in performance.

JB or BB? I can never remember which way round they are but one is a Special Edition 8meg Cache, the other is a standard 2meg version.
So the answer is: they are almost definately differant PCB's.

Great, thanks for the info guys. I'm pretty sure I'm after the 2MB BB.
