Way To Do Projections?

Hi, Tek-Tippers! I've been tasked with creating an Access database to hold correspondence inventory and production numbers. That part is pretty easy, but Management also wants the ability to look at projections.

For instance, we expect to get 100 pieces of correspondence inventory (letters from clients asking for something) each day. We have 3 people working this correspondence desk, and each person can do 40 average pieces per day.

Obviously, if our projections are right, we don't need all three people working that desk every day, so we could loan one to another department sometimes.

Each day, Management would like to see a layout of the past, current, and future week, with actual data for past days and projected data for coming days. If we got 400 pieces yesterday instead of the 100 projected, we would not be able to help another department this week, and the report would show this.

Does anybody have any suggestions on where I might look for ways to do this? I'm stumped.

Microsoft Project would be a good product to start with. Not sure how you would get the data into Access though. It's quite possible there is a way to export/import using VBA, since they are both MS products, but not sure.

Illegitimi non carborundum.

Projection" at least implies the forecasting of future events / activities on the basis of past performance.

As noted in any / all stock market ads. " ... Past Performance is not an in dicator of future performance ... ".

A great number of variables may (probably are!) involved in your situation. Is the activity seasonal? Tied to external iswsues / events (think the economy, weather, ... ).

Whatever your position at this organization, it would be hazardous to make "projections" without a thorough knowledge and understanding of the 'business model', and even then there would be a distinct possability of making a carrear altering issue here.
