Can this be done?
What i want is "CONFIDENTIAL - FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY" in big grey (10% black)letters in the backgound
I can insert text as a custom header but only in solid black and I want 10% black
I can create what I want in PowerPoint, save as a wmf and set as the worksheet background but this doesn't print
A simple text box sit on top of the cells
I stuck now...

K )

The only suggestion I have is to add a WordArt object. Use one that prints at a 45 angle perhaps. You can play around with the color and lines and transparent feature to avoid being too strong while viewing and printing.

See if that works for you.

What type of printer you have?, I know that the bigger hp-laser printers have this feature embedded. S. van Els

HP-lasers & tektronix 850's but i need an Excel solution for this. It needs to be portable

Hi, Killian. You need to create a bitmap or other type (you'll see what type is acceptable), you can probably create in Paint or Powerpoint, but you need a "separate" graphic, not Wordart. Do yourself a favor and test for size before you go creating some fancy-schmancy graphic. It appears that it will tile the picture. To give you an idea, 4 smilies fit into one default-size cell.

So, you go to Format-Sheet-Background an double-click your picture.

Tips: Use very light gray lettering. This may not work for you as I have heard people grumble that it prints on top of the data, blah, blah. Many people have just learned to put this info into the headers/footers.

Thanks for all your suggestions. I can now say, based on your replies and some additional research, that what I want to do is not possible in Excel, The semi transparent WrdArt on top of the cells is the closest you can get... shame - is this still the case with Excel2000?
