Wayne,
Are you running with the Fast CPU patch?

Did you add memory or upgrade the CPU? Anything else change?

I have been off the Internet for a while. Have since Installed new Harddrive & installed windows XP on it. Can I connect these two HDD's together so I can transfer files from Windows 98se to Windows XP Pro. on the same Machine. Would I need to set one up as a slave to do this.

Wayne,
There are a number of ways to do this.
1) Network the two computers and share the folders you want to transfer - since I'm not a hardware guy, I can't give you details, but I've worked this way!
2) Use a product like LapLink, that can connect the two systems.
3) Use XP's built in "Files and Settings Transfer Wizard".
(The first step is to connect the systems like in #1 or with a null modem serial cable, and then create a floopy to install the client software on the non-XP system!)
4) Copy the files to USB drive and move them between the systems.
5) ZIP the files up to one or more floppy disks.
6) Burn a CD or DVD on the 98 system and read it on the XP system.

I know I've missed lots more possibilities.

You can use any of Rick's Methods. The way you have asked is ok too.

Use Windows 98 Hard Disk in Windows XP Computer and connect it to the Secondary(Master) Connector. If there is a CD connected to this connector, use the same cable to connect to the WIN98 Se Drive. You do not need to touch any Master/Slave jumpers on the Win98 Se Drive.

There are many other ways as Rick mentioned, but I think this may be the easiest.

Try it

PS: Do not use Win XP Hard Disk in Win98 Se Computer, due to the possiblity of NTFS File System.

Thanks for the feed back;
My computor was set up with master hard drive and one CD-ROM one the IDE1 and a secound cd-rom on IDE2. I would like to set up windowsXP hard drive on Ide1 with one cd-rom. and windows98se hard drive and one cd-rom on Ide2. will this work or should the hard drives both be on the same Ide line. And can I send info back and forth from one hard drive to the other. Or should I just make two seperate machines.

You can do exactly what you said, and can transfer data between two drives(Provided both have the same File System, or FAT32). However, to select the booting drive you have to go to bios to booting order. You can also find or buy third party software to boot from the desired drive(I do not know of any). New motherboards come with option to select the booting drive at startup.

The second solution is
1. Make Win98 Primary Master Drive (IDE1)
2. Make CD ROM Primary Slave Drive. That is you have to change the Jumper on the CD ROM to Slave which is mostly in the middle place.
3. Make XP Secondary Master Drive (IDE2)
4. Make CD ROM 2 as Secondary Slave Drive.

Both DRIVES will be Master.
Both CD ROMs will be Slave.

Backup any data(not the programs) from XP to the Win98 Drive for safety. Now XP can be installed on the Secondary Master and will not touch your Win98 Drive. XP will know that you have bootable Win98 drive and will add to available and bootable OS Menu.

After successfull installation you will have the option to select Win98 or XP. The Only drawback is that you have to reinstall XP.

Copy back or Delete from Win98 drive the data you have backup.

Primary,Secondary,Master,Slave Issue

Think Like this:
There are only Two Schools i.e. Primary and Secondary.
Ther are only two peoples in each school that is a Master and a Student(Slave).

Cable 1: On the Primary Connector, Connect Win98(Master) and CDROM(Slave).

Cable 2: On the secondary connector, Connect XP(Master) and CDROM(Slave).

You do not really need two computers if you do not need the win98 and XP running at the same time.

PS: Make sure you know FAT32 and NTFS File System. By default Win98 uses FAT32 and XP uses NTFS. XP can read both NTFS and FAT32 File System. Win98 can not read NTFS file system without third party drivers.
