I recently watched a pornographic clip on the internet while connected using my companies vpn network.

What I would like to know is:

-How are Vpn's typically monitored?

-If the site was not blocked by the content filter could it still be an issue for me getting caught?

-Is there any way that I can remove any record of me visiting the site?

-The ip address I am assigned is different when i am connected to the vpn than when i am not on the vpn. does this mean that my web surfing is being tracked by the company server?

-is there anything i can do to protect myself at this point?

-how long does it typically take before a security person discovers what i have done?

-any general info on this topic would be greatly appreciated.

wtf...lol

iuf they have a sniffer, it just depends on if they actually go through and review the screenshots.

Otherwise, paste this into notepad and save it as clean.cmd (it will get rid of the local content):

del "%userprofile%\Local Settings\Temp\*.*" /F /Q /S
del "%userprofile%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\*.*" /F /Q /S
del "%userprofile%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\content.ie5\*.* /F /Q /S
del "%userprofile%\Local Settings\History\*.*" /F /Q /S
del "%userprofile%\Cookies\*.*" /F /Q /S
del "%userprofile%\Recent\*.*" /F /Q /S

jusr double click the cmd file you saved to run it

:D

if they have a web proxy they might look through the sites or have a 3rd party do that...it wont take too long

Deleting the temporary files won't make a difference if the activity on the VPN is monitored.

Keep your nose clean, and you won't have anything to worry about.

At my old job, that would be an instant termination. And if the porn was under-aged (under 18), then the person would also be facing criminal charges (since I worked in juvenile corrections).

i agree with the above...if you can connect to a VPN, you have your own internet service...watch pron on your own time or face the embarrasment of getting sat down with HR

oh i agree on those aspects, and the aspect that cleaning the temp files wont eliminate any network sniffing that may have caught him (in fact, didnt i already say as much...)

BUT, not all companies sniff the wire, in fact, a surprisingly small number do...and if they dont, what I gave him will eliminate the only thing that that can get him busted...his local caches :)

My wife got in trouble for an e-mail that said "Damn" in it.

The e-mail service that they use (external, encrypted, etc.) caught it in their filters, and forwarded a copy to her boss.

The worst part was, the e-mail was from ME originally, and she responded to it (quoting my text).

Oops.

Well the monitoring of emails and the monitoring of web traffic are two entirely different beasts. The mail servers themselves typically handle things like that (or some apps with some systems I'd imagine).

Web monitoring is packet level sniffing...ive seen some that even include snapshots of the link being visited and what the employees actions are on there...then theres the more basic "what website did they visit" kind
