Warning - The tape drive has a problem with the host interface

Whenever I try and perform an action using Veritas 8.6, I know its old but it has worked perfectly up to now, I get the error message:
Warning - The tape drive has a problem with the host interface
Check the cables and restart

I have checked the windows event log and receive an error ID of 58004

I have tried restarting the server, updating the drivers, using different media, but to no avail.

The server is at a remote site so would prefer to ask first if anyone has any ideas.

power down the server
power down the tape deck
reseat all cables
power up the deck and let it finish its self-test
power up the server
