My Avaya merlin has just gone haywire. I mean that the red warning light is on on the control unit, and the telephone sets are useless. When I put the sets into test mode, the red lights stay on, and it rings. When I touch a line button, it dies nothing. When I touch HFAI, the light comes on, but I do not hear a beep.

The system is a 1030 with FM4, two line modules, and two vt modules.

Please help, I love this system!!

Start by disconnecting ALL connecting cords at the control unit (mark them for reconnection later.) Take one set and plug it into Ext. 10, and see it it works. If not, try another Extension port, and try another set. It you can get one set working, plug the connecting cords back in, one at a time, testing everything after each set is reconnected.

You may need to remove cards down to a basic 5x10 configuration, and you may have to swap boards to find what is the problem.

Hopefully, you can narrow it down to a bad card, bad set, or bad wiring; then eliminate it and repair/replace it.

I turned the system off and the pftt worked just fine. All of the phones are connected directly to the control unit. All terminals on all vt cards and ports do the same thing. I have switched all of the cords. The warning light remains on with no sets plugged in. I think that this might be as a result of a power surge. Would a diagnostics module help any, or would I be better off lugging this system down to the local avaya dealer???

Chances are the power supply or the processor went bad. They are cheap enough to buy, like on ebay or the secondary market. Those old mules are bulletproof otherwise.

Ok, I will buy a new processor. Could the feature module be bad??
Thanks for the help!!

Look for a Legend system and some ATL cards. They will be more available than the 1030 stuff, and you will get more features with the system, i.e. the ability to add voice mail and remote maintenance for a few.

Actually,

At my office, I have a full blown magix. But I have this system at home to keep down the yelling in the house. It also handles the music, the doorphone, and classic mail. Thanks for the suggestion, but being the programming idiot that I am, this system is just user friendly enough for me.

Thanks,
Austin

I've seen bent or broken pins on the backplane cause warning lights on these systems. Pull out all modules and physically inspect with a flashlight. If all is OK, card it for a minimum 5x10 config and try different mods to see if it will become operational. Also, if you are not using any mods in the 3070 portion of the system disconnect all expansion cables from the rear of the cabinet and see if this clears the warning light. If all else fails we do still carry a small inventory of 1030/3070 equipment. Brian Cox

All pins are fine, The outercover of the power supply is warped, so that is the problem.

Thanks,

Austin
