Hello all,

I've been in IT for a little over 4 and a half years and I've done many different things. Security and crypto have always interested me but I haven't been fortunate enough to be somewhere that I could learn more about it.

That's why I'd like to know what you guys think is the best way for a person like me to learn more about security related fields on my own time. Books, training, software, anything would be helpful.

Thanks

Probably the best resource for new security professionals would be the books that revolve around the CISSP Common Body of Knowledge. All of the books lightly cover the 10 Security Domains recommended by ISC2.

You can get to ISC2 at or do a google search for CISSP.

There is actually plenty of stuff on the web. Unfortunately, much of it is chargeable.

However, I did find a stack of free content at the following URLs:

This has hundreds (maybe thousands) of pages of security policies and explanations.

There is also a full glossary of hundreds of security terms if you get stuck on something at:

These are a good start on the free side of the equation. I hope it helps.

Thanks a lot! That will definitely get me started. If you guys can think of anything else please post it too.

There are several useful links in faq83-395. One or more of these might provide a starting point.
