Sorry if this has been asked before but the search facility is down.

I have a directory compare program (accord) which I have set to run as a service with SRVANY using mapped drives to shares on other machines.

Obviously this will work fine when the account used in the service (admin)is logged on as the drive mappings are retained.

If the machine is left logged off then the service will start the program but the copy will fail as the drive mappings are not there.

Is there any way to map drives to the system account ? then use this as the account for the service.

Any suggestions to get round this gratefully considered but as I am going away for the weekend i will not be able to post any further response until Monday.

In our current environment, we run a little batch file every night that copies a file from one server to another. We use a generic account that we created and gave the necessary rights to the resources used. The first command is to map the necessary drive. It works like a charm. This drive persists no matter who logs on. So the answer is yes to a degree

As far as I understand it.. the system doesn't have rights to copy files from network resources.

Instead what we do is setup an NT account which is given permissions to the network recource and then using either the AT command or Internet Explorer Scehduler set the batch job to run as this new NT user.

You batch file can make a drive letter connection for you if you wish using the syntax:

net use z: \\machine\share

This would map drive letter z to the shared folder.

By default IE scheduler and AT commands runs as SYSTEM so any copy/paste of files across network would fail..

Also found that in IE5 and 5.5 the scheduler wasn't installed if I chose custom setup.. insteas choosing typical setup it was installed.. and found in the MY COMPUTER icon on your desktop. Easy to use. check the ADVANCED menu to setup a default user for timed jobs.

z600. is correct. system is insufficient to do the job. The account starting the service must have access to all resources used. System is only local.
