look here
in the upper left corner is a mandala with a flare behind it. I need to re-create this effect, with a different color background. Don't have the original file. Have tried everything I can think of, and a bit more, but I haven't stumbled on it in PS yet. Any advice is much appreciated! Thanks

Filter menu/Render/lighting effects. Paick and change what suits you and place behind a layer or 2 with transparency for backligting.

Also look at Render/lens flare - behind other layers with transparency.

Yes,
lens flare works great for that. I was doing this sunset scene on a lake with boats. I was trying to imitate a spotlight coming from the boat and used that. then from corner I used the lens flare for the last bit of the sun setting in the sky but used a few layers of a redorange gradient layer over it.

It even turned out great in print.
