I just started with a company, they have a domain called ex:domain-1. We were told we should change to domain-1.com. Do I need to create a new Domain and migrat or can I change it in AD and be just fine?

You can't change the domain name with a windows 2000 domain. This is a feature that is new to Windows 2003. Consider upgrading all your domain controllers or else you will be creating a new domain and migrating your users.

Curious as to why you'd want to change it? If your internal domain name is domain-1, then that should be fine. If you're not hosting your own website, and you upgrade to 2003 and use rendom to change the name, you're going to be dealing with DNS issues to see your own website.

Agree with sniper on that. What you call your domain has nothing to do with what you present to the internet. It is common practice in many companies to have their domain named localdomain.loc and present themselves to the internet as domain.com for their website and email. This is possible because the DNS servers inside the company are not made available to the internet. Internet users will only see the DNS records you host on an internet DNS server. ISP's commonly host DNS records on their for the companies they provide services to for a very low cost. Companies do this to improve the security of their network.
