I've got a 486 with a scsi controller, I didn't put it in, it was in it when I got it. I'd like to install a second HDD, as I only have one at the moment. What info do I need to find out before I consider what HDD I should buy, and are there are other issues I need to look at?

I think the SCSI card is an Adaptec AHA-151X/AHA-152X or AIC-6260/AIC-6360 and the hard drive in there currently is a quandtum PD700S

Type of drive (SCSI or SCSI2)needs to be the same. Drive size to match what your OS can handle. ID needs to be set. Terminators pulled from one or the other and a cable may be needed. Terminated drive needs to be on the end of the cable. Ed Fair

Thanks ed,

I'd thought of most of that stuff myself, so I guess I wasnt' doing too badly. A few questions though - SCSI or SCSI2 - I didn't know there was such a thing. How will I know if it's SCSI2 or not? Also, you said some cabling may be needed, won't I just be able to "daisy chain" the new HDD onto the ribbon cable that the current one is on? And finally, do I need to check the PSU, to make sure it'll be powerful enough?

First off, your new SCSI HDD will be worth much more than your whole system.

Depending on what you use your SCSI drive(s) for, you may be better off buying an IDE drive so that you can use it in your future system. SCSI is rarely used for desktop computers nowadays.

SCSI or SCSI2 refers to the connection , 50 ribbon IDC.
Existing cable may or may not have additional connector.
Power may be a problem. Depends on what you have and what you are adding.

the last 8 SCSI I've used were off e-bay at $5.00 each, so I don't sweat the price difference anymore. Ed Fair
