Want default value in drop down for a parameter 1

I'm trying to have a value selected in one of the dropdowns when the user first goes into a report rather than it simply saying <select a value>. I had thought going to the parameter properties for the item, selecting Default values and choosing 'specify values' and putting a value would do this, but it doesn't seem to work. Iv'e tried under Default values selecting 'specify values' clicking on the Add button and putting a value (such as 1 in the field, or even an expression =1, but neither of these seem to do what I require. can anyone advise what I'm doing wrong

Go to Report -> Report Parameters. On that screen under default values, select "From query" and put in the correct dataset and the variable name that is shown in the dropdown box. That should bring back the first item returned in the dataset.
