We just loaded a windows 2000 server with SQL Server 2000 on it. The server is in Georgia and I am in Ohio. We have a dedicated line that connects both companies. In Ohio we have about 10 windows 2000 servers and one of them is a domain controller. All the servers are also part of the domain. I tried to register the SQL Server that is in Georgia from a windows xp client but I could not register using the server name. But I did register using the ip address. Every time we load a SQL server we have all kinds of problems connecting to it. Lmhosts file has rescued me many times. I do have a lmhosts file on the client but it would not register the SQL Server using the server name. So my question is on a WAN to connect to the server in Georgia what do I have to do? What should I do on the Georgia server? Do I have to make changes on the domain controller? What do I have to do on client computers? By the way most clients would not have SQL Sever Enterprise manager, but they would still need to connect to SQL Server from Visual Basic applications.

You domain is probably not set up for name resolution. Check the DNS server. Also check that your computer is set to use the proper DNS server.
