Does anyone remember the plastic wall backboards that slipped over the mod wall plates, they came in colors to match the phone, if so is there still a source to buy them?
Graybar has a selection of colors for phone wall mounts. Their wall mounts have pins top and bottom with jack in the center. Not sure if this is what you are referring to or not ....
Not talking about colored wall jacks, this was plastic "plate" that fit around a mod wall jack, it basically covered any defects in the wall, from what OI remember they were apprx 12" high and 7 or 8" wide and had a rectangle hole in the middle that fit around a mod wall plate.
I remember the ones that the Bell System used, but they were for the non-modular 554 type wall set. I will have to check my BSPs. I think they had one for the 1554/2554 wallsets, and I think someone else made them too, but they made be hard to locate. You might find something like that on Ebay. If I locate a part number, I will post back.
I tried to stay out of this until I can find my old Centel parts book. In Stromberg world, the 1654 mini-wall phone was non-modular. The backer plate filled in the hole that was left if you took an old 554 wall phone down. It was the same size as a 554, didn't do much, and just filled the ugly unpainted or missing wall paper.
In AE land, we also had a retrofit plate that went on the 187? mini-walls that did the same thing. There was also a retrofit modular wall mount plate. Remember, AE jacks were not standard as the studs REALLY stuck out.
In the Bell System world the backboard for the modular wall sets is the 191C-XX. It snaps over the 630A4 modular jack for decor purposes. Mounts 550, early 1550, or 2550 series modular wall set, or AC1 base (Trimline™). It was available in standard WECO colors. It replaced the 182B and 191B backboards.
It could be used with Stromberg-Carlson and ITT modular wall sets too. Although , there was another company, CAC, I believe that made them also, but they have been gone a long time. There may have been some others also, but I did not find any in my old North Supply and Allen Tel catalogues.
You might try E-Bay, is it surprising what shows up there at times. Just type in WESTERN ELECTRIC and you may be amazed.
