I'm using vista ultimate on a dell precision t3400.

I want to enable wake up on lan on my pc. I first went into the bios and enabled it for s3 mode.

then in vista power options i've switched off hybrid and hibernate and set the pc to go to sleep after 30 mins.

I'm using a broadcom 57xx (not sure excatly which one!) network card with the latest drivers installed. I've gone to the properties in device manager then power management and ticked "allow this device to wake the computer". Only thing is to have that ticked i have to have "allow the computer to turn this device off to save power" which sort of doesn't make sense cos won't the pc switch of the nic when it's in power save??!

I'm using WOL Magic Packet Sender from another pc in the office on the same subnet. When both pc's are on i can send and recieve the magic packet. When I put the pc to sleep then sent the magic packet is does not wake up. When i wake the pc up from using the keyboard the network icon says connecting. So basiclly i can't get wake up on lan to work!!

Can anyone help?

Turn off the Allow computer to to off device...

I think you mistyped that line as it didn't make much sense :)

Only the truly stupid believe they know everything.

thanks for the reply.

I have seen the ms article about hybrid sleep and tried disabling/enabling that but it didn't work. WOL Magic Packet Sender also has a sniffer on it and it does recieve the magic packet when awake. The only thing i'm not sure about is the pass through driver? I went to broadcomm and downloaded their latest drivers for the 57xx

mvkingswood,
This is for Dell Optiplex 745's but may be true for precision too.

OptiPlex 745 computers that shipped in December have a BIOS with new power management features. (The BIOS is version 2.3.1 or 2.4.1). One feature is "Low Power Mode" which, if it is turned on, has the effect of disabling Wake On Lan.

If you want WOL to work in a new 745, follow these steps:

Press F2 when the computer starts, to enter the BIOS Setup
Use the down arrow to scroll down to Power Management. Press Enter to open it.
Scroll down to "Lower Power Mode". Press Enter to open it. Set it to "Off" and press Enter.
Scroll down to "Remote Wake Up". Press Enter to open it. Set it to "On w/Boot to NIC" and press Enter
Hit ESC once, and select "Save/Exit"
