Hello

I have been creating p65 files that are about 30 - 40 MB large (containing man embedded .TIFF files) and until now I have not had any problems opening them on a Windows NT machine with 64MB of RAM.

But i was forced to upgrade to a new machine when the old pc's graphics card died (i wonder why :)). my new machine is running Win XP with 256 MB of RAM and a 64 MB graphics card, but it takes about 10 minutes to load a 35MB p65 file and almost as long to zoom in and out!!!

I'd just like to know if anyone has any suggestions as to how i reduce this disasterous loading time. Any tips/pointers are most welcome.

Thanx a million in advance

Yes.. immediately unembed all images, which is always a bad practise in PM anyway. I don't have PM installed in my machine anymore, so will be going from memory, but under File menu you have an image management selection that will allow you to unembed all images, and only link them.

Also, when placing images, only use Image>Place. Do not Copy/Paste.

Your problem is that you have only 256M of Ram on an XP box. XP consumes more resources than NT4.0 just to run. If you will be using this machine as a work PC, then I would highly recommend a minimum of 512M RAM.

When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.

You may also want to upgrade your version of pagemaker.

From the Adobe web site:
"PageMaker 6.5x, however, may not meet your expectations in Windows XP, since it was released prior to Windows XP and was not developed for this operating system."

Good catch, onewrite.

PM6.5 has particular problems in creating PDF's, especially via Export, in XP. Upgrading to PM7 is good advice, and also make sure it is installed and run with admin or power user privileges.

When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.
