W98 user profiles

Hi All

I am going to rebuild my 98SE PC that currently has 2 user profiles set up, and want to know when I should recreate the profiles on the new build.
Do I install 98, create the profiles, and then install all apps?
Or do I install 98, install all apps, and then create the profiles?
Does either approach produce the same end result?

There is no network involved here - totally standalone.

I would choose the second option: [blue]install 98, install all apps, and then create the profiles[/blue]

That way, each profile will model itself after the default which already contains shortcuts to every app.

I would choose the first option because if you install the apps the profiles should get updated with shortcuts

I don't think it matters EXCEPT for some oddities with shortcuts or something in Office programs ( i recently read in MS article, can't remember which one). There was a recent thread here about it....oh maybe two weeks ago. I don't even remeber the subject though

I remembered now, what the issue was (i think)...It had to do with the 66character DOS path limit and how when running Scandisk (Advanced) with the "Report Ms-dos mode name length errors" box Ticked in Advanced.
That an issue would arise because the PATH was more than 66 characters deep and the Win98 User Profile Directory was "excascerbating" the issue -- as a program shortcut in the
C:\WINDOWS\Profiles\username\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp folder with a long Shortcut filename will cause errors to appear when running Scandisk (usually just give a shorter name to the shortcut filename) and or keep the usernames short (4-5 letters?) to save on the DOS limit.

I think maybe the problem weilds it's head after a bad shutdown and Scandisk automatically runs and has problems fixing the LongFileName errors....The Win32 version (Scandskw.exe) does fix it by selecting "Automatically fix errors". There's also a setting in the windows\command\scandisk.ini file for LFN fix or not, which only controls the dos mode scandisk (the one that kicks in automatically after bad shutdown...

probably would've been easier for me to find the article....
It's somewhere on MS...(haven't looked lately)
