Normal boot to W98 splash screen. Disk activity light continues to show continuing normal W98 boot progress. Get start up "music" for W98; everything appears normal except splash screen not replaced by W98 normal background. This is a dual boot system w W2000 which works normally. Reloaded video card driver and directX 8 in W98 safe mode with same results, normal appearing boot but splash screen will not go away. Any suggestions?

Try booting into safe mode and removing the win98 Splash screen. Here is how you do that..

Open the C: drive (root folder)
Find the file: MSDOS.SYS and right-click it and select 'Properties'.
Turn off the Read-Only attribute, then 'Apply' and 'Close'
Right-click the MSDOS.SYS file again and select 'Send To' and then 'Notepad'
In the [Options] section add the following line:

Logo=0
(The last character is a zero).

Save the file.
Repeat the steps to get at the file properties and set it back to 'Read Only'

Go back to the Folder View Options and select 'Do not show hidden or system files'.

The splash screen will be gone the next time you re-boot.

This might help you determine what is happening..or you could try to boot up and choose step by step..

Appreciate the suggestion. Screen stays blank except for a blinking cursor in upper left corner when the splash screen is not displayed. Somehow managed to load a second copy of the video driver and when I deleted the first driver the normal W98 display returned (after 7 auto reboots by W98). Thanks again for your help.
