Im running Win 98 SE2 on a P3 512MB RAM. I have an adaptec 2940uw adaptor card with seagate cheetah 2.1gig c drive (scsi id 0) and a 4.1 gig Seagate Cheetah on scsi id 1 and all is well. I want to replace the 4.1gig with a 9.1 gig seagate cheetah I have. So I have formatted the 9.1 gig using the Adaptec utility first of all. So on reboot the Adaptec Bios scans the SCSI bus and find the 2.1 gig on '0' and assigns it 'c' (80h?)as a drive letter, it then finds the 9.1 gig but assigns it no drive letter (but gives it 81h)?!! Windows continues to boot up. If i check explorer there is no D drive only an A:\, C:\ and E:\(CDROM). On checking the system, devices tab the 9.1 gig is listed but the drive letter assignation box is greyed out on the second tab on choosing the properties of the drive????

I have tried everything I know but cant get the drive to be 'seen' in windows explorer. I cant format the disk with a DOS or Windows utility as I can tell windows where the drive is!!!

WHAT IS GOING ON???!!!!

Please Help!!

First, check for viruses.

Do you have TweakUI installed? You can "hide" drives using this utility so you would be able to "unhide" it as well. If you have it, it's in your Control Panel.

You have formatted the second HDD width Adaptec SCSI adapter BIOS. It is LOW LEVEL format fro the drive, but not partition created. Run fdisk, select 2nd HDD and create partition. Reboot. The run Explorer, right-click on new disk (9.1 GB) and choose Format. After this you will be able to use new disk.

I now have installed the 9.1 gig on scsi id 1 and have moved the old 4.1 gig to scsi id 4 with the 2.1 gig boot disk on scsi 0.

I have fdisk'd the 9.1 gig succesfully and following a format from explorer it now has a drive letter (although there is still no drive letter as the drives spin up at POST)! The problem now is that on the system icon there is a report that "Drive D (9.1gig)is using MSDOS Compatibility mode file system"? I dont understand this as the drives hang off an Adaptec 2940UW adaptor card - the other two drives dont report this.

Ive been looking on the net but cant find the answer. Is it a driver problem in Windows? I doubt it as the Adaptec is supposed to take care of driving the disks. Maybe the Adaptec driver needs updating as the 9.1 gig drive is a LW type drive and therefore a little newer - maybe this is the problem?

Any ideas?

Thanks Guys

Chris
