Should this process run all the time?

I have a Standalone install of Perv 10.30 and the process with engine icon appears and runs at all times.

On a Client/Server setup the process is not running.

Should it be running at all times and can it be started automatically in a reliable way?

The Workgroup Engine (W3DBSMGR.EXE) can run as a tray icon or as a service. The Server engine runs as a service and uses W3SQLMGR.EXE (SQL Engine), NTBTRV.EXE (Btrieve engine), and NTDBSMGR.EXE (services manager).

If W3DBSMGR.EXE is running on a server where the server engine is installed, it could mean the server engine has crashed. Check your PVSW.LOG.

Thank for the reply.

So with Pervasive Client, on that machine, should there be a process that is always running, or will it just be visible when a request is sent to the server?

It depends. The Pervasive Client, like the Workgroup, can be installed to run the cache engine as either a service or tray icon. If it's a service, there will be a process always running. It it's a tray icon, it'll only run when an application has an active connection.
