Hello,

I'm having a problem with Arcserve and would be grateful for any advice that you might have.

We're using Arcserve 6.5 Build 620 on Windows NT.

We do a manual pre batch run backup in the evening and then after the batch run there is a scheduled backup sometime late at night.

The problem is with the scheduled one - we get the following message "W3832 Unable to find a blank media" we are attempting to use the same tape for both the pre and post batch run backups and our Backup Options are set to "Append to Media" so I'm not sure exactly what is wrong.

I'd be grateful for any advice you might have.

Regards,
Tom

Check the timeout for the first media. Make sure there is enough time (the default is 5 minutes) for the tape load and seek.

Also, do you have the tape name defined in the Destination tab on backup job, or is it set to '*'?

Hi,

Thanks for that. The time out is set to 5 minutes and the destination tab is set to the name of the tape.

Tom

Try increasing the timeout to 15 minutes. Also, you may want to either modify the job and select the tape (not just type the name in), or set the tape name to '*', if the timeout fix does not work.

Thanks jabus - I'll give that a try and see what happens tonight.

Thanks again,
Tom

Hi,

I set the timeout to 15 minutes and I got the same thing :(

I tried changing the tapename to *, but it defaulted back to the name of the tape in the drive 'DAILY' - which is the name of all our tapes.

I'd be grateful for any suggestions.

Thanks,
Tom

I take it back....

I didn't realise that this is the way it worked, but when I set the timeout to 15 minutes it just went back to 5 again - I thought the very fact I was setting the timeout meant that it applied to all jobs.

What I did was deleted the job and set it up again while the timeout setting is 20 minutes. While the timeout is 5 minutes normally, when I go to modify the job I can see that it keeps the 20 minute setting.

Am I right in saying that different jobs can have different back option settings?

Thanks......

Yes... you pretty much designate a list of parameters you want that job to run with.

It turns out that to make it work the '*' in the tape name was the way to go with that. Thanks for your help
