Hi all

I have a windows 2000 server with Arcserve 2000 Workgroup Edition installed.

When I put in a tape, I can see it in Device manager, format it, erase it etc...

When I try to backup to it i get the folllowing error in the

W3831 UNABLE TO FIND ANY MEDIA

any ideas???

Make sure your backup job is actually pointing to your drive in the appropriate group. The other thing I would check is your options and verify the selection regarding the tape to take, blank, same name, etc..

Good luck,

Hmm, I have similar problem with several arcserve installations here where I work - could this happen with tapedrive in need of cleaning tape?

Don't think so, I cleaned the heads but no improvment in the situation.

Still haven't resolved it yet, but loaded the client agent on the machine and am backing up from another server in the meantime....

I run Arc Serve 2k AE with Tape Library Option. Twice now I've ran into the problem where the GFS backup job asks for me to mount a tape in the GFS Group. It's asking for 2 possible tapes to be the scratch set of GFS-DLY group. Both tapes are in this group online and ready but ArcServe is unable to find them. The first time this happen I ended up having to reinstall everything. Now it's been about 4 months and it's doing it again. ANY IDEAS how to fix this stupid issue without re-installing and formatting and/or importing all the tapes again? I have tried running dbfix/chk etc. Any help would be appreciated!

Running On:
Compaq Proliant DL380 P3-1Ghz w/1Gig Ram
Microsoft Windows 2000 Server w/SP3
Arc Serve 2000 AE SP4 w/Tape Option SP4 -=MaYHeM=-

I forgot to add that we run a HP Surestore tape library that has a quantium DLT8000 Drive. ;) -=MaYHeM=-

(I originally posted this in another thread, but it seems relevant here as well.)

A few weeks ago our backup job began failing. Most of the failures were due to E3714 "Unable to write to media" but a few were due to W3831 "Unable to find any media". I had stashed some data on our server just before the failures began -- and this pushed the size of the data backup selection over the limit of our tape drive. I deleted the data that I stashed (it turned out to be corrupt, so I no longer needed it), and the errors went away.

I've noticed that ARCserve sometimes creates an entry in the activity log just prior to either of these errors instructing the user to insert another tape. (This only happened once on our server.)

OUR CONFIGURATION
controller: Initio INI-A100U2W PCI SCSI
tape drive: Seagate STD624000N (12/24GB DAT)
OS: Windows 2000 Server SP2 + Security Rollup Package
software: ARCserve 2000 7.0 Advanced Edition (Build 1086)

this solution worked for me.(W3831 UNABLE TO FIND ANY MEDIA)

I loaded the tape each evening and opened the "Job Status" window. From here goto the "Wizard" menu and select "Device Wizard". From here format the tape and that seemed to sort the problem, backup works.

I did this once for every tape in the rotation and the backups have continued since without a problem.

Don't know why this worked really, since all the tapes were formatted when added to the rotation in the first place.

hope this helps.

It might be overlooked or mentioned previously, but check that the job that you are scheduling is pointing to the right device group configuration. To make sure, I would the device groups and rebuild the arcserve jobs. :)

that last sentence was "I would check the device groups" hehe
