Good Morning/Evening.

I've setup a Backup Server (WY2K3, BrightStor11.5), with HP StorageWorks 1/8 Ultrium 448 TapeLoader attached. Backup server has Base Product and Tape Library Option installed.
I then have 7 servers backing up to this server with various Clients installed on each (all have Client Agent 11.5, and then we have 2 SQL, and 2 Exchange Agents installed).

My questions are as follows:

1) I keep getting a W3404 on my Exchange Backup relating to the Priv1 & Pub1 files. I have the Agent installed on the local servers, and configured with an Admin account with all Windows Exchange permissions set, and Backup Operator - Just wondered if there was something else I needed to do?

2) I am using the Multiplexing option on all the jobs (7 all on one tape each night - full backup) - Is this beneficial, or is it likely to cause issues? I have read conflicting arguments on this, and wondered what the experts thought?

3) Finally, I'm currently doing a Full Backup each night of all servers onto one tape. This then cycles round each night, and gives me a nice full set at end of week. I'm looking at doing a Differential Backup Mon-Thurs, and Full on Fri. As I'm using 1 Tape per day, and have never used Differential backups before, is this a safe/easy way to recover data?

Thanks for any comments or thoughts on this - Much appreciated.

1 This should not happen if it is backed up thru the agent correctly. Make sure the NT Agent is added to the manager properly (don't use network). If it persists look for the skipdsafiles registry setting - it should be set to 1 by default which means ARCserve will not try to backup database files as flat files which are already backed up by a dbagent.

2 Depends on how good your network is, if the drive can be streamed fully without using mux, or only using 4 streams, then using 7 may result in it being slower. It's a suck it and see approach of trial and error to get the best results. Personally I think MUX is more hassle and adds more complexity than it is worth.

3 There is a section in the admin guide which talks about this, and when restoring you can tick a checkbox to automatically mount the required tapes IIRC.

Thanks for the response vschumpy!

You were correct - The Agent was configured incorrectly, which is a bit embarrassing, as there's not an alwful lot to configure! I had mispelt the Alias mailbox!

I have found leaving Multiplexing on to be the quickest form of backing up.

Thanks for your comments and advice!

Hello Again Vschumpy.

Well, thought everything was now working, but Exchange will still not backup bricklevel.

I have uninstalled everything, and started again. I have 11.5 Windows Client, and 11.5 Exchange Client installed on Exchange server. Exchange Agent is licensed locally - Windows Agent is licensed on Brightstor Backup Server. I have used our main Admin account to configure, and it authenticates OK. However, when backup runs, it does all data, but there is no Brick Level. On restore option, it appears Greyed Out - I can go in and select Mailbox Store or Public Folder Store, but not the break down of individual mailboxes.
Error is W3404 - Unable to open file priv1.stm. This I believe is the email attachment database.

Any advice would be excellent - Cheers.

All sorted now. To get Brick Level backup working, had to set to go through the network - Now all mailboxes are backing up.

Cheers for all previous advice.
