Hi,

My windows 2000 server is not connected to the internet and so cannot connect to an external time source.

Some of the client machines to have modems but are only sometimes connected to the internet.

It there any way to configure the server so I don't keep getting w32time errors?

Not that I know of without an internet connection. Sorry mate.

yes go to a command prompt and type this

make your server it's own time server

here is what you do go to a command prompt
and type this

net time /setsntp:server_name

server_name is the name of the computer you want to became the the server for the domain.

then go to each computer but not the time server you just setup and type

net time /?

Hi,

I may be doing something wrong, but it seems that the
"net time /setsntp:server_name" command works for a few days after whcih time the server begins to return w32time errors again.

Have you got this to work on your own server?

All W32Time service does is set time for the domain. If you don't need this, just stop the service and disable it in the Services applet. You are getting the error because that server is trying to synchronize time with a PDC or Domain Controller and there isn't one to synchronize with. No matter what you do...you will always get the error unless it is synchronized with a Dc or PDC other than itself.

viktara i have this working on my domain every know and then it comes back up but then it fixes it self again

Thanks for the advice.

RTaylor: One thing puzzles me, if I stop the service won't
the Kerberos logon procedure fail because the time is not the same on the client machine and server?

Use of the MS Timeserv Service will solve your problem. Use any one computer in your LAN, that has a modem on it, as the Primary time server for the LAN. Have all of the other computers synchronize to the Primary one. I have posted a FAQ on how to do this on the NT Server Forum.

MS Timeserv will work around the time the computers are turned off.
