A colleague of mine has picked up this virus on her Win ME machine. (It's a RAM resident virus that infects all exe's that are run.) Her own Norton is piteously out-of-date, and it has affected her browser, so she can't get to Symantec's site to run a scan. I'm running Win 2000 Pro, and can't create a classic Norton Rescue set. I do have a 4-disk "System Works" set that I downloaded from Symantec.

According to the directions that came with this set, it looks like an all-day affair - (a reformat might even be quicker.) I like her, but not THAT much...

Anyone have any suggestions to a shorter or simpler solution?

Thanks! - Lin33

Well from what I see that virus (or trojan) doesn't mess with exe files but who knows. Maybe another virus not detected is the cause if that problem. Is she getting an error when trying to run exe's? Go here and download exefix08.com to a floppy then run it on her computer and see if that fixes the exe problem.

Then see this and follow the directions for removing the entry in win.ini: (click start--run--sysedit or win.ini--ok)

Then if the exe problem is fixed go here and do an online scan to see if she has any other viruses:
