This is a new twist (for me). I try to shut down, and everything seems to work OK, eventually the monitor goes dead, but instead of turning off the box, Windows restarts. No, I haven't hit Restart by mistake (my first thought the first few times it happened). I did a scan with SFC and everything is OK.
This is new behaviour for this system - no software additions, no service pack. The problem is intermittent - haven't been able to recognize any pattern to it yet. Any ideas?

Right click my computer, select Properties, then select advanced, click where it says "start up and recovery" and make sure the tick is out of the box that says automatically re boot, that should stop it from rebooting but probably the reason for the reboot is an error, do you have zip magic ?? I had the same problem with reboot but this should cure the roboot, all you have to do is cure the error :)

No zip magic, thanks for the tip. I'm planning a new install for this machine, so a quick and dirty fix is all I need for now. thanks.
