I have a W2K server in my home LAN and I have set up RRAS. It looks like everything is running properly on the server and I can see no errors in event viewer, etc. I have ports for PPTP configured. The server sits behind Watchguard firewall with GRE and PPTP tcp ports open for the VPN. When I try to test this with a Win2K pro client, the server does not answer the connection. The client is NOT behind any firewall. On the client, the vpn "dials" the ip, then it shows the "authenticating user and password" display and then it just stalls. Then there is a 721 code error which says something to the effect that the server did not answer. It seems to indicate that the VPN request is making it past the firewall and through to the server (because of the "authent user and password" display), but the server doesn't respond. I've installed and re-configured the RRAS many times. I've service packed and did manual installation of RRAS also (instead of VPN wizard as microsoft suggests). The user IS allowed to dial-in. Still no luck. Thanks for any advice.

have you tried it without using the watchguard
(just for troubleshooting) ?
Can you also try it from within your LAN (so you're sure the server is set up fine) Peter Van Eeckhoutte

I've tried it on the inside of firewall and the VPN works! I guess I blindly thought the firewall was doing its thing properly, but this would suggest that the firewall may be the culprit. I will place the server outside the wall and test again. If this is positive, i will place a service call to watchguard. thanks for steering me in the right direction. I'll keep you posted on future results!
