W2K PRO won't shutdown!!!

Running W2K PRO, SP2. When you select shutdown or restart, it goes through the motions, but the power light stays on, and sometimes the system locks up (cursor on screen with wallpaper, no mouse or keyboard) and sometimes the signal to the monitor stops, but in all cases, the PC won't power off completely, and I have to hard power off. It is a brand new Compaq Dekspro EN. It was working fine until I installed some HP scan software and Adaptec CD-software. I have uninstalled these, yet it still hangs on shutdown and restart.

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Did you by chance enable a openGL screen saver? This happened on mine and was resolved by picking a regular screen saver.
