I am attempting to set up a small home network for my personal use and tesing for exams. I have a workstation running W2K Server with SP2. I have created a PDC with Active Directory on this machine (didn't know exactly what I was doing with Active Directory). I did not configure DNS or WINS. I am strickly running TCP/IP with DHCP. Also I have two workstations that I need to join this domain. One desktpo and one laptop, both W2K Pro, SP2. They are all linked to a Siemens router (that is running NAT-ing and built in firewall) linked to my DSL modem. These two workstations are also strickly TCP/IP with DHCP. No DNS and WINS. They are all DHCP because I do not have a static IP address for my DSL service, only a dymanic IP.
My problem is every time I try to join the domain, I am getting an error message stating "the network path was not found". This is the same exact message that I am receiving on both machines so I know it is not a bad cable or NIC. I also tried joining a workgroup with the same name as my domain, then try to revert back, but still the same message.
I have created the computers in the Active Directory Users and Computers on the Server. I also made sure that I created a user name with all rights and I also made sure that the administrator had all rights, and I use both and still does not work.
The strage thing is, when I am on the two w2k pro workstations and I go into My Network Places, Entire Network, Microsoft Windows Network, the domain shows up, and when I double click on it, the name of PC that the server is installed on shows up, then it asks me to input the user name and password for that domain, then it opens up to four folders in the domain, Netlogon, Sysvol, Printers, and Scheduled Tasks. So it lets me see it, but when I try to join it tells me "the network path was not found". Please help me. Must I have DNS and WINS set up to join my domain? I have tried so many things for a two weeks now with no luck. Thank You all.
