We are installing W2K on all PCs in our company. (About 40 machines).
Now we have huge problems with some machines (all nearly the same conf.):
Celeron 333 up to P2 400,
all ATI Rage Pro onboard,
64 up to 128 MB RAM

Prob:
After install(W2k/SP3/Novell Client/NovellSP and so on, all configured right), trying to set resolution higher (especially on 15"-Mon´s), the system crashes immediatly when clicking on the register "Preferences"?(german: "Einstellungen") under Display preferences(german:"Eigenschaften von Anzeige").

Anyone knows this problem, or even better: a solution for it?

Would be very happy about fast answers(who wouldn´t be? ;-))
thx in advance

Did you get the latest drivers for the card? 'A world without donuts is like a donut without a hole.......wait that would mean more donut! I'm a Genius' Homer Simpson

So, you open Display Properties, go to settings tab, move the slider, ok it and system crashes? Or do you use the list all modes button or something else?

@rathcoffey: Have the latest drivers installed (hope so)!

@wolluff: yeah, i open display properties, and the moment i click the setting tab, the system crashes. Not earlier, not later! And that´s with three machines!

So, anyone knows?
thx,
SatanClaus

P.S.: I´m sorry about my disguisting english.

I've never seen this, so only making suggestions. Is there anything in event viewer from these crashes? Have you tried uninstalling the display adapter from device manager, restarting so windows reinstalls & then trying again?

Hi wolluf,

I will look into the event viewer, and yes uninstalled the display adapter and let it reinstall by windows.
Another hint: i put a pci display adapter in, and it worked. But this can´t be the solution: To replace a proper working display adapter with a proper working display adapter!!

So, looked up the event viewer. Only thing that was a bit suspicius, was the WDM-Service, so I deaktivatet it...
Trying on ...

SatanClaus;

When using an ATI video card with W2K, you must have the correct drivers installed. There are 2 types of "ATI" cards, those that are built by ATI, and those that are powered by ATI - there is a difference. Go to , there are links to help you identify your card and get the correct drivers.
Doesn't hurt to also have the latest version of DirectX also.

Ed Please let me know if the suggestion(s) I provide are helpful to you.

Thank you all...
Installed SP2,
installed correct drivers,
uninstalled card,
reinstalled card,
--> The machines run like hell....
Yeah

Greetz from Germany, till next time....

Sounds like a bad card, then. Do you have another one lying around that has worked fine in the past to try? Jennifer Sigman
