W2k install - keyboard issue

Hi - when doing a clean install of W2k I lose keyboard capability after the 'Checking for installed Components' phase....it is recognized at bootup but cuts off. I have tried several keyboards. All works well under W98. Any suggestions ? (Hardware - Dell xpsr400) Thanks.
