W2K authentication through VPN connection

The method we used to remotely connect users to the network was W2k clients connecting to NT4 domain controllers and using a central lmhosts file to gain access to other resources. We have now changed the domain controllers to W2K and since then the authentication is not reliable. The authentication to the vpn tunnel/firewall is fine, it is getting connected to the domain that is the issue. Sometimes it will go right through and the central lmhosts file is loaded. Other times it takes anywhere from 5 minutes to an hour before you are authenticated and able to get to any network resource. The times it does not connect 2 different errors occur. The first failed attempt is an error 53, network path not found. The second error and the error received until a connection is established is error 1311, no log on servers available to service logon request.

Has anyone else connecting in a similar way experienced this? I tried to be as brief with the problem as possible, but if you would like more information let me know.

Thanks in advance!
