Hi,

recently I updated my Windows 2000 to Service Pack 2. I have an IDE configuration:

Primary:
Western Digital WDC WR800BB-00BSA0 (80 GB) (ATA 33)
Maxtor 90845D4 (8 GB) (ATA 33)
Secondary:
Plextor CD-R PX-W1610A (Multiw. DMA 1)
TOSHIBA CD-ROM XM-5702B (Multiw. DMA 1)

As I had problems with the installation (reported STOP 0x7B INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE) I disabled the Ultra DMA in BIOS but switched it on afterwards.

Unfortunately, I LOST THE CONNECTION TO THE TOSHIBA! No matter what parameters regarding IDE I set (Multiword, PIO,...) using the IDETool from VIA, I cannot connect it. It used to work perfectly under Windows 2000, and still works on Windows 98 (on a different partitions). Both BIOS and IDETool see all devices. I have VIA chipset VT82C586.

After boot Windows freezes for 10 sec every 10 secs, some 4 times, but runs smoothly afterwards. It was also not the case before the upgrade to SP2.

What can I do?

Thanks -

Canoga

I've got that same cd-rom drive (the XM-5702B), and even though i dont have an answer for you; i was wondering if you could help me out. I have the XM-5702B, but i do not have any manuals for it, and this drive will not detect under any of the 3 motherboards i have tried it on. I am pretty certain it is the jumper settings because it was working about 2 weeks ago, and then the IDE cable fell out after moving the computer, and it hasnt worked since. On the back of the drive there are 2 areas for jumpers to go; Mode Select 1, and Mode Select 2; i got the jumpers for Mode Select 1 in place but i dont know where (or what, if any) jumpers to put on Mode Select 2. If you could help me out, that would be awesome, thank you.

Go to add remove programs and uninstall SP2. If the problems happened after the SP2 update, then you might have a corrupt SP2 install.
I have a Duron 850 on an MSI board that will not run with SP2. I have tried at least 6 times to install it and every time I get the BSOD on boot. I have redownloaded it and have been given a copy on CD, it works good on the ASUS board with a pIII but not with the Duron.I can get into safe mode and uninstall the update and everything works perfectly after.
I have queried AMD, MSI and M$ they all say it should work but doesn't.

In my case the solution was simple: I uninstalled the IDETool and it worked. I believe the tool makes some smart things with the drivers.

After unsinstalling the IDETool I got STOP 0x7B again, but it is a piece of cake: I just reinstalled the Windows 2000 after having rebooted from Windows 98 that I have on the otehr partition.

Now I see all the drives, but my installations are screwed up (Office, Microsoft Visual Studio...) but it is a diffrent story.

I presume that the XM-5702B is a not-problem device, as it is an old one, but I might be wrong. During my installations on IDE I used to have cable problems.

I can't find the manual either; did you try asking Toshiba on the Net?
