We have tried not one but two usb webcams, one a labtec webcam , the other a generic usb webcam on our Win98SE computer. The cam seems to work for a while, but when contacting friends on Yahoo or MSN Messenger(s), the screen freezes and we get a variety of vxd messages followed by a blue screen, and quite often the box re-boots itself. I have used Norton Utilities Windoctor to check the computer, it works fime for a while but usually reverts to the same behaviour. I am up to date with Windows Updates, patches, etc. I am just not really sure as to where to start looking next. The config for the box is:
AMD K6-ii 500 mhz cpu
192 megs ram
15 gigs hd divided into drives C,D,E,F,G
a USB card with 3 ports, one attached to a USB hub
an HP pc1300 USB printer.
a Realtek 8129 nic connected to a USB network hub to share Internet and files and printers with a winME computer and a Mandrake 10.1 (linux) workstation/server.

The other two computers work fine, its just this one that keeps crashing.

Any suggestions would be appreciated

Clive

one obvious possibility is the USB hub. some devices seem to only work properly when plugged directly to the PC, not with a hub. maybe test it that way for awhile?

One of the main problems with Win 98, was the limited amount of resources available to any activity. WinME didn't have this problem, and I don't think the Linux/server would have this problem. How big is the swap-file on the Win 98 hard drive? (xxx.swp, in the root)

Thanks for your responses, guys. The problem was that the box was actually on its last legs. Probs with motherboard, fans, cpu,, I managed to clean up the hd, took it out, bought a Pentium iii running Win2000 and everything is back to normal, no crashes at all on any of my machines.

Life is good

Thanks again for your responses
