How do I insert or format a fraction as a vulgar fraction in excel. I know I can format using fractions which gives me for example 6/8. I want to have the 7/8 appear as a vulgar fraction with the 7 at the top a slash and the 8 appear below onthe other side of the 7

Hi Alexander,

I don't understand - formatting as eighths will give 6/8 or 7/8 - there's nothing more to do. Can you give a bit more detail as to exactly what you want?

Enjoy,
Tony

I think I understand - you want the fraction part to be smaller, with the top half of the fraction as superscript, essentially. Are these part of a calculation? the only way i know to get such numbers is to insert them as a symbol, which excel then reads as text. What are you going to be doing with them later?

If you will NOT be using these values for arithmetic calculations then superscript the character(s) before the slash and subscript the character(s) after the slash. However, this renders the value useless in any calculation.

I know that I can use superscript and subscript but that does not look like the real thing. I can also use Alt+ 171 or Alt+172, but suppose I wanted five eights how do I find out what number + Alt that I should use. I was searching the net for some sort of table that would contain number representing vulgar fractions that I could use in combination with Alt to insert a vulgar fraction in excel but I can't find any such table.

...and the purpose for all these contortions is........????

I typed "mathematical fonts" into the google search box. 0.03 seconds later google reported "about 432000" matches. The third item returned looked as if it may be of interest.

As Skip and the others have said several times, all you will get, essentially, are pictures of the fractions - they will not be values with which you can work in Excel.

The Arial font in Windows XP comes with additional Unicode characters to represent 1/3, 2/3, 1/8, 3/8, 5/8 and 7/8. You can find them using Insert...Symbol menu item. Look in the section for "Miscellaneous technical". The 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 are found in the "Latin-1" section.
