I connect to an 81c via a VT520. I went through some of the other posts and I seem to have most of the suggested settings but when I went to print out all of my COT's it started out great but then I started to get alot of bacwards question marks.

here are some of my current settings:
terminal type-emulation mode-vt520 vt420-etc.
term ID to host-vt520
vt def char set-DEC multi
pc term char set-pc internation
comm-word size-8bit-parity-none-stop bits-1
transmit speed-1200 buad
rcv speed-1200 baud

Should I be looking at some other settings? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

VT220 is one of the selctions under the current (VT520, VT420, VT320, VT220) one checked. Sorry, I should have listed them all instead of etc.

You printing to the tty screen, or for real printing to a conected prtr? Looks like a lack of keeping up, need to toggle some flow-controls.

Eddie
The choice that is currently selected looks to apply to all of those. There isn't a way to check just one of them.

I am printing to a connected printer. Its started off OK but exactly like you said. Almost like if it couldn't keep up. Also at some points the printing was ahead of the screen.
I see the flow control threshold and it is currently set to high (768).

Is there flow control for the printer on the VT setup screen? for like xon xoff, hardware, etc?

the only options under the printer section are print mode, printer type, dec\iso char set and print terminator. Setting are in the same order-normal, dec ansi, national only, full page, and ff.

maybe i should put it this way. in print mode there is normal, autoprint and controller. I have normal checked.
under printer type there is dec ansi, ibm proprinter and dec+ibm. I have dec ansi selected.
under dec/iso char sets there is national only, national+line drawing, multinational and all characters. I have national selected.
Under print extent there is full page and scroll region. I have full page selected.
under print terminator there is none and ff. I have ff selected.

Heck, I would give auto & controller a test. It has been awhile since I used DEC VT, They have their own printer port don't they, not com1 or com2? I know I had flow control problems like that in the past, and the xon/off had to come from the printer back to the DEC. Sorry I can remember straight away on the fix.

The problem is your getting to much data to the printer and it can't print fast enough to keep up with it. you may need a faster printer or get the flow control to work.

What model of printer?

microline 320 turbo okidata.

I thought it was strange wheni saw the info going to the printer was going both ways. at one point is was behind the info on the screen and other points it was ahead of the screen

I've used that exact prtr on a dec 420 up the street, if I have too, I'll call them and make them read off some settings if you can't get it locked on. I thought it had a printer mmj along with the two comm ports though.

there are two mmj ports but i have mine connected parallel. from what i can see under the setting for comm port 1 it is 1200, 8 n 1, dec multinational, north american vt520.

I dont see anything for flow control in the port select section. there is a flow control threshold but it does not show an association to the printer directly. just low and high in the sub menu.

communication>flow control threshold>low or high.

So i tried auto print and it did the same thing. I did notice that when i toggled the printer on offvia cntrl+f2 the submenu setting changed as if i changed it there. when i switched to controller it started to print but it did not send the info to the screen. I just had to remember what numonics came next.
as far as i can tell the printout looks good but it keeps pausing and menu flashes on the printer. I am thinking the pauses are created by the schlitz codes that randomly pop up all the time.

well switching to controller seemed to work alot better. no weird characters in the printout. I can live with waiting till i have to enter one more time, then going into setup to switch to controller mode every time i need to print out a large bulk of info...

Thanks for the suggestions.
