Hi,

I'm running into problems with VSS 6 & Windows XP. Basic setup is as
follows:

Dell GX260 1.8ghz P4
512mb ram
VB 6.0 patched with SP5
VSS 6

The project is stored on the network, when we try to open it in VB6, the project seems to load fine then the error "Failed to update project location information in the host application." appears. Clicking ok clears the error and the project comes up. We then get the message "Would you like to get the latest version of all files in project \\path?", clicking on Yes produces the same "Failed to
update..." error as above.

I have tried removing and reinstalling VB completely, no luck. Checked MS Knowledge base and found article Q304230 and tried those options, still not working.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm still new to the VSS world and this is our first XP system in the development group. All other systems are running Win98SE and are running just fine.

thanks,
Jeff Steeves

We have comparable problems. We are running a Novell network and I suspect that the Novell client bites sourcesafe (or vice versa). SourceSafe runs fine under '98SE, but not on either win'0 or xp.

If you are running Novell as well, you might try installing a newer client, but I can't guarantee you anything...

Best regards

Hey, thanks for the info.

What Novell client are you using on the XP machines? Currently we're using 4.83 for XP/2000. There are a couple of service packs for the client that I'm aware of, but I haven't tried them on this system yet.

Problem Fixed! There were a few steps, please bear with me. I wanted to post them just incase it helps someone else.

1) Uninstall All Components of Visual Basic/Visual Studio
2) Delete the Visual Studio directory under Program Files. * MSDN was installed on this system so I removed it as well to keep things clean when I deleted the Visual Studio directory.
3) Empty the Recycle bin. If the VSS files are still in the Recycle Bin when you reinstall VB/VS, the install thinks there is another installation of VSS present.
4) Install WinXP SP1 if not already installed
5) Upgrade Novell Client to version 4.83sp1 if not already
6) Install Visual Basic/Visual Studio 6 with VSS component
*** 7) During the install for VSS there is a Yes/No prompt for support of only VB6.0 projects or keeping compatibility with VB5.0 & VB6.0 projects. Since our shop has some VB5 and some VB6 projects, I answered NO so VSS would keep compatibility with both.
8) Install Visual Studio SP5
9) Restarted the system to start fresh and I am not getting errors anymore.

I know this doesn't narrow it down to specifics, I'm suspecting it was the compatibility of the VSS install and the Novell Client, but it did resolve the problem here.
