My computer keeps locking up and when I hit ctrl-alt-del it says "vsmon not responding". But I cannot shut down the computer even then and have to kill the power supply.

This happens 2 out of 3 startups and is very annoying, as Windows 98SE runs through a 5 minute routine with scandisk.

Uninstalling Zone Alarm and reinstalling it, as offered as solution by some people on the Internet, did NOT resolve the problem.

OS: Windows 98 SE
Zonalarm 2.6.362

Any ideas?

Uninstall Zone Alarm PRO and install Zone Alarm Lite!!!!
For some reason in the "PRO" version it makes the PC run at almost 100% CPU.

I tried to overrite the DLLs from the Lite installation onto the PRO one, but this did not work.

So the only resolution is to:
1. Use Zone Alarm Lite OR
2. Upgrade to Zone Alarm 4.0 (That might help - not sure)
2. Use some other firewall.

NOTE: 100% CPU in my case occured only win I was running WinMX (MP3 software) otherwise it was OK when the both Pro and Lite versions were installed.

Hope that helps. It was such an annoying bug I've had for a couple of days, which I never had before.

Updating your version is the best solution I can recommend from the information provided. As for having problems with 100% CPU while running WinMX or other P2P apps, it's usually due to the large amount of UDP traffic created by the searches and such that cause ZA to work harder. It's never been a real friendly P2P firewall IMO. I prefer Sygate in those cases. ;)
