We have a large number of Win 98 machines and a number of them are having trouble shutting down. They get a message that Vsmon has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. When the operator clicks OK, nothing happens but the computer locks up and will not shut down properly and they have to shut down with the power switch. All of the machines have had Zone Alarm Pro installed for some time and have just started having this problem. ::)

Any one have any ideas?

I think VSMON is part of McAfee. Try uninstalling and reinstalling it. Regards

I have never has McAfee installed on this machine. I use NAV and Norton Utilities!!

You're right it's NOT McAfee, it's Zone Alarm, sorry for the guess, but I knew I had seen it on my PC (VSHIELD is McAfee).

Try ZA site or uninstall and reinstall.

Once again apologies for the guess rather than the definitive answer. Regards

I have recently acquired this problem and have tried unintalling and reinstalling to no effect. The uninstall requires a Registry edit too.
I thought perhaps kernel32.dll was corrupt and i reinstalled a fresh copy of that but to no avail.
Interestingly the reinstall insists it has found the previous install configuration but I cannot find where it picks this up.
Perhaps if I could unistall ZoneAlarm completely and then reinstall completely fresh it would correct the problem.
Can anyone help?

Found this if anyone's interested...

for the VSMON problem

1. Boot Windows in SAFE MODE

2. Unistall Zone Alarm 2.6

3. Delete all files within Zone Alarm directory

4. Leave any files in WINDOWS directory

5. Go to
6. Search for ZONE ALARM

7. Download the latest FREE Zone Alarm from CNET

8. Install the latest version.

9. Be careful to answer the questions conservatively.

10. Choose "Notify me everytime ZOne Alarm protects my computer.

11. Do not run Zone Alarm in silent protection mode because you will never learn when certain programs are entering or exiting your PC.

For the shutdown problem

Have you downloaded the win98 shutdown fix from microsofts website????

(plus, there're tons of previous posts in this forum on the Win98 shutdown problem)

this is almost the exact same problem i had with za. you will have to reinstall and uninstall and remove za from registry. follow carrr thread. side note ; never again will i have zone alarm on my machines.it worked fine for years and just went berzerk one day, these are just my opinions and i am nobody. PEARL

I am also experiencing the vsmon illegal operation/PC freezes/power off problem. After reading all this (and a few other threads), I am going to try uninstalling ZA now from safe mode. I'd rather not re-install it, though. I was wondering if anyone knows of a good free firewall pgm to try instead of ZA. I am using Win 98 SE, and connect to net via cable modem.

Thanks in advance.

Sygate provides a free one for home use, seems stable so far..... :)

I wasn't getting shutdown issues, but I my PC was running at almost 100% CPU most of the time when I was connected to the Internet AND having WinMX running with Zone Alarm 3.5.169 as my firewall.

When I installed Zone Alarm 3.7 LITE the problem went away.

What I suggest you do to test your problem.

1. Upgrade you Zone Alarm version (3.7 Lite or 4.0 Pro)
This may help not sure, you'll have to test

2. Uninstall Zone Alarm and install another firewall product.

Cheers
