I've changed this line "nopriv_user=nobody" so vsftp runs as nobody and restarted the service, but it's still running as root, any idea how to achieve this.

# ps ax |grep vsft

"1760 pts/0 S 0:00 /usr/sbin/vsftpd /etc/vsftpd/vsftpd.conf"

# ls -la /proc/1760/root
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 May 20 13:09 /proc/1760/root ->

Not sure how vsftp works, but it may spawn a new process when a user logs on to the ftp server, with the designated nopriv_user owning the spawned process.

It probably has to start up as root to open a priviledged port.
