VS80: enabling Compression/check-update Firmware 1

I have a Benchmark DLTtape DLT1/VS80 tape drive that I would like to enable Compression on. How would I do this??

Also, I would like to check to see what version of Firmware is on this drive and update it if it needs to be. I've looked at the manaul on how to do this, but I can't understand how you would get the firmware to the tape without performing a backup. Can someone tell me how to do this??

The Benchmark VS80 will use data compression automatically, you can check the firmware and test the drive by using XTALK, this program is downloadable from Quantums website
