Hello all , we have 2 passports with IST but instead of having SMLT to 5510 stacks ,our customers want 2 seperate 5510,s one from each passport. This is because of the 6 MLT limit per switch.
I have done this with the same vlan on each 5510 and the same gateway HOWEVER it reports a ip conflict on this gateway.I thought it might be possible as both passports appear as one switch.
Does anyone know if it is possible to implement VRRP in this scenario or is it just meant for SMLT ??
Any help much appreciated.

If you're not doing some form of SMLT there isn't a whole lot of need for IST, but in either case you should be able to setup and use VRRP.

If you are not using SMLT, you should need:
1. MLT between the two 8600's with a common VLAN assigned to the MLT on each 8600. ENABLE STP ON THE MLT!
2. Configure VRRP on the 8600's.
3. Assign the VRRP VLAN to the port (tagged or untagged) going to the first 5510 switch or stack. ENABLE STP ON AT LEAST THE UPLINK PORT IF NOT THE WHOLE SWITCH!
4. Assign the VRRP VLAN to the port (tagged or untagged) going to the second 5510 switch or stack. ENABLE STP ON AT LEAST THE UPLINK PORT IF NOT THE WHOLE SWITCH!

Just curious... Why is the customer concerned about a 6 MLT limit on the 5510's? That's an awful lot of uplink capacity. Do they need that much?

Thanks for the onfo guys, the answer to the last question is they are feeding 10 other switches (5 each side of a rack enclosure)that then feed blade servers !!
