I HAVE A IBM X SERIES SERVER TYPE 8656-6SG AND THE PROBLEM IS THAT THE SERVER INTERMITTANTLY LOCKSUP. WHEN I REBOOT THE MACHINE THE VRM ERROR LED SHOWS UP ON THE DIAGNOSTICS PANEL.THERES ONE CPU IN THE SERVER AND A TERMINATOR CARD BUT NO VRM INSTALLED IF I RESEAT THE CPU AND TERMINATOR CARD THE SERVER WILL WORK OK FOR ABOUT 2-3 DAYS THEN THE SAME ERROR OCCURS, ANY THOUGHTS?

Yes, It's refering to the onboard vrm,not the optional one for the second cpu, call IBM and place a service call, most likely your system board needs replacing. Rich

I shall use google before asking stupid questions!

The x340 has an onboard Advanced Systems Management Processor. If you have the driver installed and IBM Director in your environment, you can read the logs without shutting down the system. The same is true without the driver and Director Agent if the ASMP is interconnected to an ASM PCI adapter or RSA/RSA II via RS-485 bus. Otherwise, when you can schedule some down time, you can boot to CMOS <F1>, and review the System Error Log. If it logged a fault with the VRM (or CPU - start at the earliest timestamp), IBM will replace it.
